Last week, I said Carew Tower is the tallest building in Cincinnati.

For now.

Already, between Third and Fourth Streets, across Ft. Washington Way from Great American Ballpark, construction has begun on what will soon be the tallest building in the city.

The Great American Building at Queen City Square.

At 41 stories, it will be 86 feet taller than the Carew Tower.  Much of that 86 feet will be the distinctive “tiara,” the rounded, transparent top to the building.  The building takes its name from Great American Insurance, which is leasing much of the office space from crosstown rival Western-Southern Group.

The building is different from the squarish high rises that dominate downtown or the classic lines of the Carew Tower and PNC Bank Tower.

Construction began mid-2008 and is expected to be completed by late 2010.  Right now, it’s just a hole in the ground.

Looks like a pretty building. That green glass is sure popular.

Is the glass top an atrium? I imagine the view would be spectacular.

We are lacking skyscrapers here in Amarillo. I’d say maybe 25 stories is the tallest and we only have a couple.

Is is me, or does it remind anyone else of a seaglass bullet?

From hole in the ground to mighty building!
